Abstract

The article illustrates the content of The library. A world history by James W.P. Campbell and Will Pryce, a book on the architectural history of libraries, from ancient times to the present days. The reading and the examination of this important work bring out the evolution of architectural forms of library buildings as the main aspect of the whole discussion, something that becomes the main theme around which this article develops. In particular are being underlined the connections and influences that the social and cultural context in the various eras and civilizations have resulted in changes and transformations of these architectural structures. In the wake of this fascinating journey made by the authors through the centuries in libraries of all times, this review retraces the process pausing and drawing attention to those who most significantly marked the stages of this evolution.
